My town – 50 years ago and now

I live in a small town in the south of Spain. It is near the Mediterranean coast. Fifty years ago the town was very different.
My town was smaller. The buildings were old. There used to be a lots of small shops in Molvízar. Now there are fewer shops, but they are bigger and more modern. There didn’t use to be blocks of flats. Now there are big blocks of flats and big houses. There was a convent, which later became a Civil Guard Station. Now it is a museum. There used to be taverns where the old people used to go to play cards. Fifty years ago not all the people used to have a TV. Now all the people have a TV at home. Fifty years ago the town was filthy.

Transport is very different too. People used to ride on a mule to go to other towns. Also there were a few taxis and buses. People didn’t use to have a car. Now most people have one. There used to be tracks. Now there are motorways. Now people usually go cycling.

My grandparents lived in the town fifty years ago. They say that life was very different. In Molvízar there were shepherds and many people were forwards. People used to pick up gropes, almonds and olives. The doctor used to go to the houses of the patients. Now you have to go to the health centre. At night neighbours used to meet in a house and there they used to tell stories. Children used to play with spin and the girls used to play with rag dolls. What a different life!

In conclusion, life was very different. My grandfather thinks that life was better fifty years ago, because now children don’t go out to play and do sport, because they are always playing with their mobiles or they play video games. In my opinion life is better now, because technologies can help us.

Eating less meat could save 45,000 lives a year

Processed meat can produce cancer if you eat it all the days, but I think that if you eat processed meats sometimes, it can't produce cancer, because it has vitamins and it is necessary for a full diet.

If processed meat produced cancer, many restaurants might not serve any meat at all, because it would be unhealthy for the customers and they wouldn't eat it.
I think people are eating more meat than fish or vegetable, because the parents are travelling and when they arrive at home, they don't have much time to do the cooking and also the children like meat better than fish or vegetable.

In my opinion there are a lot of people that eat meat every day and they have problems with their weight and other problems with their health. They should have a balanced diet that has processed meats, but in small quantities.

I sometimes eat meat and I think that it isn't bad for my health.

NO SMOKING: Drive me home, Daddy!

Smoking in cars should be banned in all the places of the world, not only in England and Wales.

It puts many people in danger, because the driver who is smoking doesn’t pay attention to the road and it can cause an accident and other people can die because of that.

Smoking in cars is dangerous for all the people who are in the car, but especially for the children, because their health is weaker than the adults. The people who don’t smoke, but are in the car with smokers are passive smokers, they inhale the smoke of the cigarette of the smokers and it is unhealthy.

I think that smoking at home is healthier than smoking in the car, because the house is bigger than the car and the smoke is less concentrated and the passive smokers inhale less smoke.

I agree with the law, because this way people will be safer and they won’t be passive smokers.

Writing unit 1

This is me by John

What can I say about his image?

I'm going to write about a boy called John. I think he is very sporty. He usually wears sporty and casual clothes, he always wears tracksuits and trainers, although he wears formal and smart clothes on special days. He doesn't usually wear bracelets or ring, because he doesn't like theses thing, because for him these things don't suit him.

Three things he loves

He really likes playing football, for him it is his favorite sport, at the weekend he's always playing football, he says that he will be better and better. He also likes watching it on television, sometimes he goes out and watches football in a bar with his friends. The second thing that he likes is listening to music, he's always listening to music in his free time and he also listens to music when he's studying, for him music is very important. The third thing he likes is reading books, he usually reads books before going to sleep. He loves adventure books, he has a collection of them in his bedroom.

Three things he hates

In contrast, he doesn't like studying because for him it isn't as reading a book, because reading books is interesting and studying is boring. However, he studies a lot, because thanks to it, he will have a good future, for example a university degree in medicine. The second thing he doesn't like are people who think that they are better than anybody, fortunately his classmates aren't like that. The third thing he hates is trekking. His father, his mother and his brother like it, all of them were in the Pyrenees for trekking, but in contrast John didn't like it. He has so angry that he says that he will never go trekking again.

My friend and me

I'm going to describe me and my best friend Álvaro. I met him at kindergarten when we were very little, since then we have been friends.

Álvaro is tall, brown skinned, he has short brown hair and he doesn´t have either earrings or tattoes. He is very sporty. Álvaro is funny and talkative, I am not. I'm brown skinned, tall, I have short brown hair and I have neither earrings or tattoes like him, because we don't like there things. I'm very shy. I think we are a bit similar.

We've got similar interest. Both of us like football, when we have free time we are always playing football and talking about football. Most of the weekends we go to play football with our friends. All of us enjoy playing football. Our friends say that football is the best sport, because it's funny and all the people can play it and I agree with it.

Both of us are interested in football and we play it together with our friends. He likes music, but I don't like it much. He is talkative and I`m not. In many things we are similar.

Palmyra: Historic temple destroyed

Palmyra was an old city in the Syrian desert. Palmyra was also the capital of Palmyra’s Empire. It was added to the list of World Heritage Sites in 1980 by Unesco.

On 18th August in 2015, Palmyra's retired antiquities chief al-Asaad was beheaded by ISIL after being tortured for a month to get information about the city and its treasures, but al-Asaad refused to give any information to his captors. The jihadists destroyed the temple of Baal on 23 August 2015 according to Abdulkarim and activists, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the destruction took place one month earlier.

In my opinion the jihadist are very dangerous people, because they kill a lot of people and also destroy historic monuments. I think that nobody is sure about the jihadists attack, although most of the attacks are in Syria, Palestine, etc…

Happy birthday, Magic Johnson!!!!

Earvin Johnson (Magic Johnson) was born on 14th August, 1959.  He was a basketball player and also a basketball coach.

Magic Johnson studied at the university of Michigan, but in 1979 he left the university to play with Los Angeles Lakers. He won with Los Angeles Lakers five titles of the NBA.  He helped the Lakers to become one of the most famous teams in the NBA. He was three times the Most Valuable Player of the NBA.

In 1993 he left the Lakers, because he was diagnosed with AIDS.  One year later he won the golden medal with the USA basketball team in the Olympic Games of Barcelona.

His last season was the 1993-1994 where he showed again his talent.

What will the weather be like, Mr Marmot?

Groundhog Day is a legend that has been kept for centuries, its origins clouded in the mists of time with ethnic cultures and animals awakening on specific dates. Groundhog Day is celebrated on 2nd February every year in the United States and Canada, it is the day that the Groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter. If the day is cloudy the Groundhog takes it as a sign of spring, but if the day is sunny he takes it as a sign of six weeks more of bad weather.

The most famous groundhog is Phil, he lives in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania where he goes out of his hole every year on 2nd February. This year he has predicted six weeks more of bad weather in Pennsylvania.

I think that Phil is enough receivable because he has succeeded more than 70%.

FLOODS!!!

Cyclogenesis, is the process of extratropical cyclone development and intensification. Cyclogenesis is initiated by a disturbance occurring along a stationary or very slow-moving front between cold and warm air. This disturbance distorts the front into the wave like configuration.

Recently, last January there was a cyclogenesis near the North Sea that affected the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. This cyclogenesis caused winds of 100 kilometers per hour and also caused a fall of temperatures in the majority of the Iberian Peninsula.

I think the floods that produced the cyclogenesis are very dangerous because they can break houses, buildings, palm trees and even they can catch people who walk near the coast.

The Freedom Tower

Freedom Tower (which is now called One World Trade Center) refers to the main building of the new World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Freedom Tower is the highest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere, and the fourth-tallest in the world.

I had never heard anyone speaking about the Freedom Tower, it’s the first time that I hear it.

I remember what happened to the Twin Peaks, I know that Twin Peaks were knocked down by two planes in 2001. The planes were forced by commands of the terrorist group called Al Qaeda and they were flown successively one after the other one against each of two towers, first against the South Tower and then after against the North Tower.

A bloody matter

The word 'bloody' is a colloquialism. It is a swear word that many people find offensive that is used to emphasize a comment or an angry statement. It is used to highlight someone or something in a negative light, for example: if your car had broken down, you would say: 'that bloody car'. It is frequently used as 'bloody hell' that means ' 'oh no' .The origin of the word was to swear upon the bloody death (Of Christ) Or the cross.

Blood represents 1/13 of the total weight of the human body. It circulates through the arteries, capillaries and veins. Consists of a liquid part called plasma and a solid part which are cells: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

You should do exercise for 20 minutes three days a week to burn 300 kcal so that your heart is in good shape.

Le Tour de France est fini...mais Paris est toujours là!!!

I still haven’t visited France, but I think that France is a very beautiful country, because in France there a lot of fantastic buildings to see and to enjoy them, for example the Eiffel Tower, which is for me the most famous building, the Arch of Triumph, the Notre-Dame Cathedral, etc …

I don’t like cycling much, but I know something about the tour of France because it is very famous. I know that it’s a competition during three weeks in July. I know that the winner of the tour is Chris Froome, because I saw it on TV.

In the future, I would like to visit Paris to see a stage of the tour of France and also for see the fantastic buildings.

Facing exams... Buckaroos!!!

Buckaroos is the local names for a cowboy. The word buckaroo is similar to “vaquero” in Spanish. In Spanish “Vaquero” is a shepherd of animals who possesses messes and cattle, traditionally he rides a horse, and often he carries out to the mess.

Buckaroo comes from the Arabic 'bakara' or ‘bakhara’ that also means heifer ‘or’ young cow, and is possible that it has been taken by the Spanish during the centuries of Islamic domination.
Originally the term was understood literally as ' boy who takes care of the cows ', but the modern sense has to see with the adult keepers of cattle of the American west of 1849.

I have some more tips for exam success:

- To do lists of concepts
- To do schemes
- To observe the drawings and graphs.
- To do comparative pictures
- To write down notes of everything the teacher says

When the moors ruled Europe

The Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex in Granada (very near us). It was originally constructed as a small fortress in 889 and then largely ignored until its ruins were renovated and rebuilt in the middle of 11th century. It was converted into a royal palace in 1333.

Alhambra's Islamic palaces, as we know them today, were built for the last Muslim emirs in Spain and the court of the Nasrid dynasty. After the conquest of Granada by the Reyes Católicos in 1492, some portions were used by Christian rulers.

Now the Alhambra is one of Spain's major tourist attractions, exhibiting the country's most significant and well known Islamic architecture, together with 16th-century and later Christian building and garden interventions.
Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I have visited the Alhambra two or three times, and I have liked it because it is very big and it has beautiful palaces.

Amazing living bridges in India

The living root bridges of Meghalaya are a form of tree shaping, which creates these suspension bridges, they are handmade from the aerial roots of living banyan fig trees.

These bridges can take 15 to 20 years for the surreal, strong web of tangled root bridges to connect the two banks of a river. Unlike traditional constructions, Meghalaya’s root bridges only grow stronger with time, never requiring major maintenance or rebuilding; the strongest root bridges are more than 100 years old. In the past 25 years, however, the practice of building these living bridges has been dying out. Rather than spending years creating living paths, builders today use steel rope and modern construction methods to bridge Meghalaya’s streams and rivers.

I think these bridges are good for the people who live there, because with the help of the nature they can cross the river without danger or go to a place where they can’t go without the help of these trees.

Smoking in Russia

I think smoking in public is dangerous for the person who walks near a smoker, because it might be harmful for his health, for example they can inhale the smoke of the cigarette of one smoker. The people that don’t want smoke, but they inhale the smoke re called “passive smokers”

Smoking in public is dangerous especially for the children, because a lot of people smoke in the parks and there, there are a lot of children playing with her friends and they can inhale the smoke too.

I agree with the laws of Putin, because this way people will be surer and there won’t be any passive smokers.

What is the Maginot Line?

This is the first time that I hear about the Maginot Line. The Maginot Line was a vast fortification that spread along the French and German border, but became a military liability when the Germans attacked France in the spring of 1940. This line is named Maginot Line because the Minister of War was Maginot, and he gave the financing for the construction of this line.  The construction of the Maginot Line started in 1922 and it was finished in 1936. In 1939 the line was elongated from Switzerland up to Luxembourg. The line didn’t avoid the defeat of France at the beginning of the Second World War in 1940, because the Germans surrounded the Maginot Line for through its western extremity.
